James Naismith Archival Collections

McGill University, Springfield College and the University of Kansas all share a history with Dr. James Naismith. Born and raised in Canada, Naismith graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, in 1887. He graduated from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts (then called the School for Christian Workers) in 1891 and while there invented the game of basketball. In 1898 he came to the University of Kansas where he pursued a long career as educator, mentor and sports enthusiast. All three institutions have contributed digital files created from analog materials from their Naismith Collections and they can be seen here together, for the first time.
