Description

Do Mind Your Grammar... The numbers of auslanders in St. Petersburg in the 18th century and later certainly fluctuated a great deal but there's little doubt that the Germans and French, followed closely by the English, were the dominant species. In addition to the great numbers of scientists and naturalists who flooded Russian universities as faculty and who led expeditions, there was an ever-growing crowd of visitors and tourists who authored on-site accounts. And any touristy "in" place spawns dictionaries and grammars galore – better or worse in quality. Lomonosov's Russian Grammar, 1757, was the first truly scholarly grammar of the Russian language.
