Winter Notes on Summer Impressions... Austrian diplomat Augustin de Mayerberg was sent 1661-1662 by Emperor Leopold I to mediate in the fight between Russia and Poland over the Ukraine. The diplomatic mission failed but one happy result was this beautifully illustrated account of the sojourn published 165 years later and containing valuable information on the political history, government, and way of life in 17th century Russia.
