Dating his life and work, and hence dating the emergence of the Swahili language itself from its Arabic origins, have been a matter of considerable contestation. Scholars relying on written sources have estimated Liyongo to have lived 400-500 years ago, while those relying on the oral tradition of the Swahili people have dated him several centuries earlier. At any rate, it can be ascertained that the origin of the Swahili poetic tradition predated the colonial period by several centuries. The work exhibited here is a collection of various poetic selections either attributed to Liyongo himself as author or celebrating his place as a folk hero of the coastal Swahili people. Title A name given to the resource Utenzi wa vita vya uhuru, 1939 hata 1945 [Poem of the war of freedom, 1939 to 1945] Description An account of the resource Utenzi wa vita vya uhuru, composed by the noted and prolific Tanzanian author, Shaaban Robert, is possibly the longest utenzi poem ever written. In 3,000 stanzas, Robert recounts the events of World War II from the German invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1939 to the defeat of the Axis powers in 1945. The entire war is summarized, with inclusion of important battles and events of the struggle. The poem is important for its presentation of the African perspective on the war and its depiction of the role of African troops in various arenas of wartime activity. So far as is known, it is the first of the utenzi poems to relate events occurring outside the East African sphere of events. The poem exemplifies two important aspects of the utenzi tradition in that it deals with a religious theme and reflects the strong ties with Arabic literary influence. It was written around 1858 by Mwana Kupona binti Mshamu (c. 1810-1860) for her daughter, Mwana Hashima binti Sheikh (1841-1933). Didactic in purpose, the author wrote it to instruct her daughter as to the proper behavior of a faithful and dutiful wife. She advises that while she should pay proper deference to her husband in all matters, she must nevertheless talk to him “as if he were a child.” The poem has been especially popular among women, with the name “Mwana Kupona” frequently appearing even today in such public places as store fronts and market stands. It stands as a notable exception to the patriarchal tradition among Kiswahili poets of the time. While written literary texts were predominantly the work of men, women are noted for their important role as keepers of the oral tradition.
