I am interested in figures with their backs turned to the viewer, which is one of the reasons I chose to paint this photograph. The ambiguity of the figures reflects my own complicated feelings about my identity, something that feels uncertain or unfixed. The inspiration for this painting came from a photograph of my father standing barefoot on top of the roof of his first house here in the U.S. Hence I replaced my fathers figure with "myself", hovering and not completely grounded, as I am also wearing his clothes and carrying his feet, seen along with additional symbols such as the swaying white napkins. This concept stems from my experience with my unfixed identity, the burden of not belonging, and feelings of unfamiliarity and separation. Here I am thinking of feet as vessels in in of themselves, not just part of a vessel, our body. The purpose of feet for those who constantly use them for work, migration or running away from a war is what drove this concept of hanging feet. It is kind of a humorous image, the idea of someone taking off their feet for the day and hanging them to "rest", placing great importance on them, as the clothes are disregarded. However that highlights the struggles of those who have no other choice but to constantly "abuse" their feet to survive. As a material, I find it compelling that rebar is can only be seen when a building is destroyed, otherwise it is invisible. As the child of a Syrian immigrant, the talks of Syrian history and the civil war is something embedded in my mind, and a place of war and destruction is unfortunately what people perceive Syria as. The disoriented rebar figures came about as a response to the Syrian civil war, but also addressing the normalization of associating destruction and famine to the Arab world. While walking it's final steps down in the darkness into the dead-end path, with nowhere left to go, it decided to pause just for a single moment, out of sheer desperation to save itself. In that stillness it turned and looked within….and this is the image it witnessed. The magnificent grace. Wings which can fly, let go and leave. The fragment of the sun itself, the ever-giving source of life. The flame. The Light!
