Mine is usually a vibrant color like purple or pink and my mother is a medium blonde and uses it to cover her grey hair. Every time I cover my mother's grey hair with dye, I realize her age and want to hold her tight and never let go. The love my mother and I have for each other is seen in this photograph, my mother's touch and my gaze, trying to capture this moment and save it for later. Walking around the observation deck, I could see the city in all of its glory, a place that was once just a place to me, now felt more like a friend I was getting to know, discovering things I'd never even heard of, seeing places that brought back nostalgia. It was beautiful and as I stood on that observation deck, I knew that what I'd experienced would remain in my memories forever. Title A name given to the resource The Male Gaze and the Objectification of Women Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2024 Description An account of the resource A project that began as self-love turned into something that confronted a major issue in media and society. The media often portrays women as objects that can be sexually objectified just because they show a little skin. Women are portrayed as weak and sleazy as if their only goal is to make a man fall in love with them by using their bodies and pretending to be helpless. In this project, I capture myself through the eyes of the male gaze and then confront this by presenting expressions of shock, anger, or a blank stare. Referencing photographs taken by Ruth Harriet Louise and Cecil Benton during the golden age of Hollywood and Cindy Sherman’s, Untitled Film Stills I used direct flash to create harsh lighting and drown out most of the background, almost like a spotlight you can’t escape. This project documents my aging mother and our close relationship in a collection of intimate photographs. My mother had me when she was in her late forties and because of this, we have less time together. She's now sixty-eight and I'm now twenty-six. I want to capture our remaining memories together as time doesn’t wait for you to be ready. Because Alzheimer's runs in my family, sometimes it feels like a ticking time bomb held over my head. Alzheimer’s took my grandmother from me, and I pray that it won’t take my mom. With each photograph I make, it feels as if I lose a part of my mother, and I’m grieving for that loss.
