This vase represents the downfalls of hubris and how the myth of Arachne exhibits this idea. Throughout my artwork, I analyzed the flaws of humanity and how ancient stories are altered to fit the societal norms of current generations. I also explored the use of texture and form to convey a meaningful narrative. I believe that if society is able to recognize our flaws instead of concealing them, we will grow into a more accepting population. This project documents my aging mother and our close relationship in a collection of intimate photographs. My mother had me when she was in her late forties and because of this, we have less time together. She's now sixty-eight and I'm now twenty-six. I want to capture our remaining memories together as time doesn’t wait for you to be ready. Because Alzheimer's runs in my family, sometimes it feels like a ticking time bomb held over my head. Alzheimer’s took my grandmother from me, and I pray that it won’t take my mom. With each photograph I make, it feels as if I lose a part of my mother, and I’m grieving for that loss. Title A name given to the resource The Male Gaze and the Objectification of Women Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2024 Description An account of the resource A project that began as self-love turned into something that confronted a major issue in media and society. The media often portrays women as objects that can be sexually objectified just because they show a little skin. Women are portrayed as weak and sleazy as if their only goal is to make a man fall in love with them by using their bodies and pretending to be helpless. In this project, I capture myself through the eyes of the male gaze and then confront this by presenting expressions of shock, anger, or a blank stare. Referencing photographs taken by Ruth Harriet Louise and Cecil Benton during the golden age of Hollywood and Cindy Sherman’s, Untitled Film Stills I used direct flash to create harsh lighting and drown out most of the background, almost like a spotlight you can’t escape. I engraved this image I took of a grazing cow onto porcelain tiles, questioning the relationship humans have with animals and thinking about my heritage. My mind always goes to the parallels between human / animal interaction and traditional male / female relationships in traditional Mexican culture.
