Title A name given to the resource Archival VHS Videocassette Housings Description An account of the resource This image illustrates the kind of archival housing we use for a common analog video format here at the library, a VHS videocassette tape. The tape’s original paper-based housing can be seen on the left. On the right is a polypropylene case made specifically for use with VHS cassettes. The archival videotape case is essentially just a larger version of the cases used on audiocassette tapes. The inert plastic case clasps together and creates an airtight seal that keeps any water, dust, and debris away from the magnetic media. Peter I had a strong interest in developing a school of military engineering and in 1723 merged Moscow's school with the one founded in St. Petersburg in 1719. Equally important to the tsar was a school of mathematics and navigation. With Scottish mathematician and astronomer Henry Farquharson in charge, a syllabus was devised for the school that included arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, astronomy, navigation, geodesy, and related subjects. L.F. Magnitskii manned a staff in the school that included many western scholars, Farquharson among them. Magnitskii himself had already gained fame with publication in 1703 (ours is a later edition) of his Arithmetic, written in Church Slavonic. In spite of the title and its use as a textbook of arithmetic, it was an encyclopedia of mathematics, geodesy, astronomy, and navigation; it was a literary masterpiece that was still being widely read until mid-18th century. Lomonosov called it "the fates of knowledge," and it is considered the most important Russian schoolbook of the early 18th century. Bound with this are three manuscripts of works attributed to Aristotle, including the pseudo-Aristotelian work "De pomo", translated from Hebrew into Latin by King Manfred of Sicily. It is clear from the presence of these four works together in their 15th century binding that, in the eyes of the original owner, a book is a book whether printed or handwritten and is important for what it says rather than for the form in which it was made.
