As a tourist, I wandered, taking in the stunning views and tasting sun-soaked fruit.. But behind the stand is a person who sees that same breathtaking view every day, not as a tourist, but as someone working long hours to make a living. The shopkeepers pick up bits of English through daily exchanges with foreign tourists. They learn English out of necessity, not for fun or curiosity, like many of us do. As tourists, we wander freely while altering the rhythm of someone else’s everyday life. In capturing this moment, I hoped to shed light on the generations of Italian farmers who have generously shared the fruits of their labor with passing tourists, while we, in return, often offer little beyond fleeting admiration, taking far more than we give culturally.
