Title A name given to the resource Muyaka: 19th Century Swahili Poetry Description An account of the resource The nineteenth century saw the rise of a written poetic tradition that moved toward the secular, with everyday issues of social and political interest captured in verse. Perhaps the most notable poet whose works exemplified this trend was Muyaka wa Mwinyi Haji (1776-1840) of Mombasa. He wrote on such everyday themes as love and infidelity, prosperity and drought, the sexual exploits of key figures of his time, and the everyday problems of Mombasans. English and Swahili A poem concerning the death of the prophet Muhammad = Utendi wa kutawafu Nabii: a traditional Swahili epic, with transliteration, translation, and notes on the reading of Swahili manuscripts in Arabic script for advanced students Description An account of the resource Utendi wa kutawafu Nabii, a characteristic example of the utenzi tradition in its early expression, commemorates the life of the prophet and includes his final message to the faithful before being visited by the angel of death. The poem exemplifies two important aspects of the utenzi tradition in that it deals with a religious theme and reflects the strong ties with Arabic literary influence. At left is an illustration of the first lines of the epic woven into a traditional Swahili mat. Title A name given to the resource Utenzi wa Vita vya Maji-Maji [Epic of the Maji-Maji war] Description An account of the resource With the conquest of East African peoples by Germany in Tanganyika and by the British in Kenya, the realities of colonial politics led to further secularization and, along with it, indigenization of thematic material in utenzi poetry. Utenzi wa Vita vya Maji-Maji written by a Sufi scholar from Lindi a few years after the Maji-Maji rebellion occurred (1905-1907) in inland Tanganyika, brings these virulent and tragic realities to the attention of the contemporary reader. Written in the utenzi tradition, the author chronicles the war from an African point of view in a lengthy poem of 334 stanzas. The author describes the establishment of the socialist system known as ujamaa under the leadership of Julius Nyerere, praising his efforts for this accomplishment. During the 1930’s and 1940’s, the Swahili newspaper, "Mambo Leo" [Current Affairs], served this purpose for many aspiring young Swahili writers of the day. Many of these selections were later collected and republished in the multi-volume set on exhibit here. Title A name given to the resource Tendi: six examples of a Swahili classical verse form with translations & notes Description An account of the resource Utendi wa Mwana Kupona [Mwana Kupona’s Poem] is one of the most popular poems in Swahili literature. It was written around 1858 by Mwana Kupona binti Mshamu (c. 1810-1860) for her daughter, Mwana Hashima binti Sheikh (1841-1933). Didactic in purpose, the author wrote it to instruct her daughter as to the proper behavior of a faithful and dutiful wife. She advises that while she should pay proper deference to her husband in all matters, she must nevertheless talk to him “as if he were a child.” The poem has been especially popular among women, with the name “Mwana Kupona” frequently appearing even today in such public places as store fronts and market stands. It stands as a notable exception to the patriarchal tradition among Swahili poets of the time. While written literary texts were predominantly the work of men, women are noted for their important role as keepers of the oral tradition.
