Title

Japanese Foodways, Past & Present

Description

The collection of interdisciplinary essays considers the production, consumption, and circulation of Japanese foods from the mid-15th century to the present day in political, economic, cultural, social and religious contexts. In his chapter, “Honzen Dining: The Poetry of Formal Meals in late Medieval and Early Modern Japan,” Eric Rath explores the rules for honzen (formal banquet cuisine) meals from 1400 to 1868 by examining their structure and sampling their aesthetic imagery.
