The origins of the developmental state in Taiwan

History of science and technology policy in Taiwan and China.

The author examines the ways in which the Guomindang (GMD) state planned and promoted scientific and technical development in mainland China between 1927 and 1949 and on Taiwan after 1949. It describes the roles played by politicians, technocrats and academic researchers in the construction of institutions designed to foster scientific and technical instruction, research, and collaboration with industry.
