The title of this work originates from a famous Chinese prose sentence: "香远益清，亭亭净植" ("Fragrant from afar, increasingly pure; upright and untainted"), which poetically conveys the lotus's elegance and purity. The subject of a lotus flower typically conveys a classical image of summertime leisure and beauty in Chinese painting.
