They are somber to me, they are abandoned, left where no one can reach them and exposed to the elements. It led me to think about what other parts of ourselves we abandon. My own hands are cold most of the time because of poor circulation. Do they feel abandoned by the rest of my body because they don’t get as much blood as the rest? Although they are cold, they still have a lot of life left in them, if no one is there to hold them, at least they have each other. Title A name given to the resource External Bifurcation Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2024 Description An account of the resource Oftentimes I have to monitor my actions so that I can fall in line with social expectations externally, this behavior is commonly referred to as masking. I represented these expectations through my image of two halves of a doll. Like a mask, the outer shell can be taken off, it symbolizes the performative nature of what women are expected to behave and look like. The more mechanical, robotic, inner workings of the doll ironically represent freedom, liberation from what you should act and look like. The flowing tendrils of hair show how energetic and free the being is without its outer shell restricting it. The heart-like organ represents its soul but also shows how vulnerable it is without its shell. This is one of the best-preserved Moorish sites, and it was incredible to see the stone carvings that have survived for 700 years.
