To me, an oracle is someone who has special knowledge or experience. In this piece, the oracle is a spaceship mechanic who is interrupted from her work by a small child with a broken robot. They are part of the Kayan tribe, also known as the Long Neck tribe. They came to Thailand to flee persecution in their home country Myanmar. Since they are refugees, they are not allowed to work and rely on tourism for their income. My family is from Thailand, and we visited them when we went to North Thailand. I remember a few of the women there were making beautiful tapestries on a loom, and were very kind to us. My Lightbox integrates the use of a large space meant to be interacted with in the physical world. While the Lightbox is a model made of foamcore, it represents the importance of spaces made for social gathering. When making this piece, I imagined the space as a gateway or stopping point within a park for people to rest and gaze at the lush green sights surrounding them. I also thought of my piece as a connecting point between two buildings, like the connecting point between Marvin Hall and Chalmers but with steps that continue through the passage.
