I have always been fascinated by the subtle transitions of color, the intricate patterns on feathers, and the organic shapes from our bird friends. Although sadly, we are losing some of them forever. In November 2024, the Slender-billed Curlew (Numenius tenuirostris), a migratory shorebird that once bred in western Siberia and wintered around the Mediterranean, was declared globally extinct. After finding no evidence of the slender-billed curlew in three decades, scientists have declared it extinct. The last confirmed sighting occurred in Morocco in 1995. I printed a Slender-billed Curlew made up of other bird friends we have lost in recent years, including the Kauaʻi Nukupuʻu, Kauaʻi ʻŌʻō, Bachman's Warbler, and Bridled White-eye, in the hope of remembering them. All the color layers were printed with watercolor—those vibrant colors, other than the key, will gradually fade over time. Just as preserving the art, our bird friends might lose their beautiful colors if not given enough care. As an immigrant from Southern China, he came to the US to work laboriously, aiming to provide a better life for his family back home. After many years of hard working, he decided to retire and reunite with them. However, the pandemic halted his plans. Stuck in the US, he continued construction work doing home building/renovating for new immigrants, as flights were not affordable. He got hit by heavy building materials at work but didn't take it seriously or seek help due to language barriers. He passed away alone, his story untold. As an immigrant myself, I created his portrait hoping to share his story with a wider audience. He didn’t speak much English, take the subway to commute, or venture into the city. Yet, he was a proud, hardworking New Yorker, an integral part of the Queens community. Title A name given to the resource Daoyou Feng (aged 44, 11 Jan 1977, Guangdong, China - 16 March 2021, Atlanta, USA) Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2024 Description An account of the resource Daoyou Feng was the last victim from the Atlanta Shooting on the evening of Tuesday March 16, 2021 to get identified. While we can see the shooter's face, his bad day, his "sex addiction," and how he was always a good boy everywhere on the internet, the only impression she left to the world was "she was from China," and "she was quiet and kind." This is not fair to me. I hope people hear about her life, her caring for her family, and how hard she had to work to live independently in the U.S. here as an immigrant who didn't speak much English. She should not be invisible. Her life was meaningful. According to the only two clear photos I can find online, I carved her portrait onto a sheet of affordable plexiglass. Then printed it with flowers with roots. Specifically in China, people say “fallen leaves return to their roots.” Her pass away and ash cannot return home made her a person without root. I disagree with that. She actually carried her roots with her at wherever she was standing.
