Title A name given to the resource Succulent Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2023 Description An account of the resource May 2020 in the depths of quarantine, I finally put the skills learned in my high school art experience together to create an innovative piece. Taking an old window and pairing it with my love of botanical subjects, I managed to create a strong piece with cheap paints and brushes. At first learning to paint on glass presented many challenges, as I had to find a healthy balance between wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques so that the paint wouldn’t peel off of the surface. Looking back at this painting I see it as a time-stamp of myself as a 17 year-old artist. Everything about the painting is virtually wrong. Wrong because brushes were destroyed, a crime was committed using of black to broaden color variety, brushes were destroyed, and it was varnished with mod podge. However, reminiscing on these blissful mistakes always manage to bring a smile to my face. Blooms are all in various stages of growth– some buds, some petals full, and others close to falling off. Heaviness at the top of the piece, contrasted with the dark emptiness, is oddly serving visual peace. This extreme draws attention to the white specks of imperfection, given by the elements in its short lifespan. To enjoy the piece is to embrace the uniqueness of the subject, and the non-typical composition. Title A name given to the resource Tiger Lily Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2023 Description An account of the resource Walking through the whimsical garden of Quigley’s Castle in Eureka Springs, AR, this strangely shaped bloom caught my eye. For years I was unaware this flower was what is more commonly known as the Tiger Lily. It just seemed alien-like compared to most, and I fondly referred to it as my "pumpkin flower" photo. The shape of the petals reminded me of a hot air balloon, suspending the hanging stamens. Yet, the stamens seemed to be crawling in active search for their next pollinator. Making it seem eerily sentient. Walking around the observation deck, I could see the city in all of its glory, a place that was once just a place to me, now felt more like a friend I was getting to know, discovering things I'd never even heard of, seeing places that brought back nostalgia. It was beautiful and as I stood on that observation deck, I knew that what I'd experienced would remain in my memories forever.
