It was the subject's first time at the festival, and like many members of the LGBTQ+ community, they felt an immense sense of love and belonging from everyone around them. The series was created to document the damage of the riots that broke out across the Minneapolis-St. Paul area following the murder of George Floyd. The photo is part of a series of images that the artist created as her final project for a course on Ukrainian film. The goal of the project was to try and portray the terror and panic that Russia has instilled on the people of Ukraine as the war rages on right outside their doors. The artist used a combination of slow shutter speeds and quick zooming while pressing down on the shutter to create the illusion of motion in the image. As a material, I find it compelling that rebar is can only be seen when a building is destroyed, otherwise it is invisible. As the child of a Syrian immigrant, the talks of Syrian history and the civil war is something embedded in my mind, and a place of war and destruction is unfortunately what people perceive Syria as. The disoriented rebar figures came about as a response to the Syrian civil war, but also addressing the normalization of associating destruction and famine to the Arab world. Here I am thinking of feet as vessels in in of themselves, not just part of a vessel, our body. The purpose of feet for those who constantly use them for work, migration or running away from a war is what drove this concept of hanging feet. It is kind of a humorous image, the idea of someone taking off their feet for the day and hanging them to "rest", placing great importance on them, as the clothes are disregarded. However that highlights the struggles of those who have no other choice but to constantly "abuse" their feet to survive. The inspiration for this painting came from a photograph of my father standing barefoot on top of the roof of his first house here in the U.S. Hence I replaced my fathers figure with "myself", hovering and not completely grounded, as I am also wearing his clothes and carrying his feet, seen along with additional symbols such as the swaying white napkins. This concept stems from my experience with my unfixed identity, the burden of not belonging, and feelings of unfamiliarity and separation. I am interested in figures with their backs turned to the viewer, which is one of the reasons I chose to paint this photograph. The ambiguity of the figures reflects my own complicated feelings about my identity, something that feels uncertain or unfixed. The addition of the rebar, with its length and color varying with each figure, here represents the different weights and variations of the Arab upbringing and experience. His work shoes that he labors in, are tied down on a block of cement with rebar, a material I use to represent my (or our) Arab identity. Inspired by repeating moments in my childhood in which I helped my dad untie his shoes when he came back from work, this piece addresses the notion of being "tied down" by ones identity, mainly an identity that people here in the U.S have come to know as "Arab".
