Despite the obvious turmoil of the fire, the focus of the image is on the strange words of "Hootch Rat." This is a reference to the artist's grandfathers retelling of his service during the Vietnam war in which the artist's key takeaway was a bizarrely humorous story of the rats her grandfather witnessed in "the hootches." The emphasis on the nonsensical words reflects many people's reaction to traumatic and world altering events through the lens of comedy. On the bank of the Kaw are tiny cubes of sand that form piles and mountains no larger than your hand.
