The plastic bag scraps take on an organic, almost-floral quality, contrasting the synthetic, non-biodegradable material from which they are made. Handmade paper is similarly made of offcuts and paper waste from my studio. This low-waste studio practice draws attention to the irony of recycling as the “personal responsibility” of individual end consumers, versus the massive scale of pollution and waste caused by global industry. Title A name given to the resource It's a Sign Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2025 Description An account of the resource For many years, I’ve used the cotton-paper pages of my 1963 printing of Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud as the background for paintings and drawings. When displaying these works, I’ve frequently noticed viewers spending extra time reading the text on the page, presumably in an attempt to make meaning from the words combined with the imagery I created, despite the fact that absolutely no thought goes into the selection of the pages before I use them. As humans we are pattern-seekers. When our life experiences are unexplainable, we look for signs in nature, from stories, bones, tea, Tarot, slips of paper baked into cookies, the alignment of the stars - and, as with Dr. Freud, our dreams. We also use signs to communicate concrete meaning - for example: names, locations, and societal expectations. With their often elaborate silhouettes the shapes of signs contribute to the visual experience and feel of a place. This series, IT’S A SIGN, is at once a documentation of the unique sign shapes, I have found in my small adventures, and a tongue-in-cheek criticism of our human tendency to seek meaning in that which is merely coincidental. Title A name given to the resource Slender-Billed Curlew Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2025 Description An account of the resource We often take for granted the land, vegetation, and living creatures around us. I have always been fascinated by the subtle transitions of color, the intricate patterns on feathers, and the organic shapes from our bird friends. Although sadly, we are losing some of them forever. In November 2024, the Slender-billed Curlew (Numenius tenuirostris), a migratory shorebird that once bred in western Siberia and wintered around the Mediterranean, was declared globally extinct. After finding no evidence of the slender-billed curlew in three decades, scientists have declared it extinct. The last confirmed sighting occurred in Morocco in 1995. I printed a Slender-billed Curlew made up of other bird friends we have lost in recent years, including the Kauaʻi Nukupuʻu, Kauaʻi ʻŌʻō, Bachman's Warbler, and Bridled White-eye, in the hope of remembering them. All the color layers were printed with watercolor—those vibrant colors, other than the key, will gradually fade over time. Just as preserving the art, our bird friends might lose their beautiful colors if not given enough care. Title A name given to the resource Towering Towards the Blue Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2025 Description An account of the resource This mural design concept for the Jayhawk Welcome Center celebrates KU, the student experience, and long-standing traditions through a collage of iconography that represents KU and the idea of "towering towards the blue." Iconography "towers toward the blue" by interacting with the sky in various ways. Examples of this includes a volleyball player reaching up to hit a volleyball; the KU flag waving in the sky; graduation caps being thrown into the air; newspaper being thrown up during a basketball game tradition; a student reaching up for a book; a dog reaching up for a TPE student; etc. Thus, the design captures multiple aspects of KU, from sports, to academics, to traditions, to KU symbols, and more. This mural concept is for a room that is used by KU Student Ambassadors, so the goal is to both honor the student experience and excite future students visiting the Jayhawk Welcome Center.
