Despite the obvious turmoil of the fire, the focus of the image is on the strange words of "Hootch Rat." This is a reference to the artist's grandfathers retelling of his service during the Vietnam war in which the artist's key takeaway was a bizarrely humorous story of the rats her grandfather witnessed in "the hootches." The emphasis on the nonsensical words reflects many people's reaction to traumatic and world altering events through the lens of comedy. Often condemned for what it takes, it is hardly given credit for what it gives. Without rot, nothing can be new. The mask is made to look like rotting, twisted branches and bark surrounded by the wings of black birds (often associated with death.) The entire array is inspired by biblical imagery of angels, specifically the Angel of Death.
