Rath, Associate Professor, History Subject The topic of the resource Biographical Statement Description An account of the resource My research focuses on premodern Japanese social and cultural history especially foodways, consumption, and the performing arts. I offer courses on Japanese and Tibetan history and food culture, and I have taught at the University of Kansas since 1999. My recent research on the history of Japanese culinary culture appears in two books. Food and Fantasy in Early Modern Japan (University of California Press, 2010) traces the history of Japanese cuisine from its origin in medieval rituals to its formalization in early modern culinary writings. Japanese Foodways Past and Present, co-edited with Stephanie Assmann (University of Illinois Press, 2010), includes 14 chapters by scholars from Japan, America, and Europe covering 600 years of Japan’s food culture with topics ranging from children’s lunches, dining out in WWII, and wine. I have also written about the masked noh drama, one of the highpoints of Japan’s traditional culture. The Ethos of Noh: Actors and Their Art (Harvard University Asia Center Press, 2004) examines the professionalization of noh theater and developments in noh’s artistry from 1400 to the modern day. Before he usurped the throne, Wang Mang married his daughter to the Han emperor, who soon died. The daughter remained loyal to the Han even after her father’s usurpation. Her dramatic death occurred when rebels toppled her father in 23 A.D. The ancient historians wrote: In temperament she was tactful, moderate, and morally resolute. After the house of Han had been deposed, she pleaded illness and refused to attend court. Her father held her in fear and respect and was deeply grieved. He received his B.A. in French and Comparative Literature in 1974 from Indiana University, his M.A. in Chinese in 1976 from Yale University, and his Ph.D. in Chinese in 1984 from Princeton University. He studied one year of Chinese in Taiwan in 1976-77 and did Ph.D. and post-doctorate research at Fudan University in Shanghai and Beijing University in Beijing for four years between 1979 and 1991. He has taught at the University of Kansas since 1984, where he was chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures from1996 to 2008.
