The photo is part of a series of images that the artist created as her final project for a course on Ukrainian film. The goal of the project was to try and portray the terror and panic that Russia has instilled on the people of Ukraine as the war rages on right outside their doors. The artist used a combination of slow shutter speeds and quick zooming while pressing down on the shutter to create the illusion of motion in the image. At times, I tend to be overwhelmed with the urge to hide in order to recover, recollect myself, and just take a breather. The character hiding in this collage is Garen, from my graphic novel, Garen’s Diary. Garen’s Diary is a journey on overcoming trauma, reestablishing trust, and learning self-compassion. Garen’s Diary is intended to allow the viewer to experience enough solidarity, compassion, and empathy to find humor in trauma as a means to heal.
