I have always been drawn to realism, and challenging myself to give life to a canvas - I love seeing subjects come alive through the paint. This large oil painting of Sade Adu was done in my free time, to take my mind off the hardships of my STEM classes. Sade's mix of soft and hard features made for a challenge, but a beautiful outcome. I chose her as my subject due to her beauty, elegance, and influence on contemporary music. As a Nigerian musician, she opened the doors for those who followed her and is an icon in the voices of black history. The lack of balance in this necklace represents the unequal recognition that Gods received in Greek mythology, much like society today. Throughout my artwork, I analyzed the flaws of humanity and how ancient stories are altered to fit the societal norms of current generations. My hope is that my viewers are inspired to uplift others while taking action against oppressors when viewing my artwork, regardless of the recognition that may come from those actions. I also explored the use of texture and form to convey a meaningful narrative. I believe that if society is able to recognize our flaws instead of concealing them, we will grow into a more accepting population. This project documents my aging mother and our close relationship in a collection of intimate photographs. My mother had me when she was in her late forties and because of this, we have less time together. She's now sixty-eight and I'm now twenty-six. I want to capture our remaining memories together as time doesn’t wait for you to be ready. Because Alzheimer's runs in my family, sometimes it feels like a ticking time bomb held over my head. Alzheimer’s took my grandmother from me, and I pray that it won’t take my mom. With each photograph I make, it feels as if I lose a part of my mother, and I’m grieving for that loss.
