Title A name given to the resource Raccoon Barb Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2024 Description An account of the resource Raccoon Barb refers to my identity as someone who has had to survive through uncertain times. There was a time in my life where my bicycle was my primary mode of transportation in Corpus Christi, Texas, and it made me feel like a wild animal who is trekking across this city just to make a living and survive. I was sweaty and hungry all the time, and I worked in the food industry where a lot of times my meals were dependent on my job. I would eat expired bakery items and rely on my “free meal” as my main meal of the day aside from when I ate dinner at the end of the day after biking home. Raccoons are smart, agile survivors and I saw myself this way for a long time. I would also steal food from stores and eat meals based on coupons that I was given. It was a hard time, and I use this raccoon human character to commend my ability to survive through those hard times. Dog is a sentient hand puppet that the villain of the story, Seattle, wears when she steals Garen’s diary. This painting shows Dog holding the diary in his mouth. Garen’s Diary is a journey on overcoming trauma, reestablishing trust, and learning self-compassion. This painting is based on this sequential narrative which is represented as several volumes of zines. Garen’s Diary is intended to allow the viewer to experience enough solidarity, compassion, and empathy to find humor in trauma as a means to heal. Title A name given to the resource Not Safe Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2024 Description An account of the resource Not Safe recounts a period of time in my life when I was living in an apartment complex in a rough neighborhood of Corpus Christi, Texas with an unreliable roommate. The collage elements allude to the chaotic thought processes of feeling unsafe in uncertain times. Although this difficult time was five years ago, and I am in a much more secure, safe environment now, the memory of the traumatic time is still fresh in my mind. I handle trauma by going to therapy but also by using humor in my art to manage the heaviness using a cartoon style and bright colors. If I can laugh about it, it becomes much more manageable to process. At times, I tend to be overwhelmed with the urge to hide in order to recover, recollect myself, and just take a breather. The character hiding in this collage is Garen, from my graphic novel, Garen’s Diary. Garen’s Diary is a journey on overcoming trauma, reestablishing trust, and learning self-compassion. Title A name given to the resource Coffee Subject The topic of the resource LibArt 2024 Description An account of the resource Coffee is part of a series of sketchbook-inspired collages that are meant to express the importance of freely transferring thoughts into material. Coffee is a glorified page of my sketchbook that expresses how important coffee is in my life - “Dear Sketchbook, I think that coffee might be my religion.” Coffee helps me to get that extra boost of energy and focus that I need to start my day and keep going. This routine is sacred to me - it impacts my entire body and mind, and it is something I do every single day. My style is inspired by cartoons. This dog character is directly inspired by Jake the Dog on Adventure Time. Contemporary cartoons are an ongoing pillar of my life - they have changed my outlook on what art can be as well as what life can be. The cartoons I consume have changed me existentially and have shaped my humor. Laughing in order to process trauma is my primary mode of healing other than therapy. The various forms of coffee represented throughout the piece are coffees that I usually drink such as nitro, shaken espresso, and espresso shots.
