Jenks almost single-handedly made the psychology of perception an essential ingredient in cartographic research. He designed many experiments to better understand the manner in which people perceive maps and extract information from them. The dot density map featured here was used in an early eye-tracking experiment to determine how “average” map readers interpret spatial patterns on maps.
