"At the appointed time the juniors being drawn up in due array, were confronted by Miss Flora Richardson, who discoursed them in a serious and affecting manner of the responsibilities soon to rest upon their individual and collective shoulders. She warned them that their days of frivolity were over, and presented as a symbol of their newly acquired power, responsibility and glory, in the shape of a hat, generally known as a "plug" hat, or rather more than ordinary ugliness."
