Weighted Memory

Based on a photograph from my childhood, this painting depicts my grandmother, myself, and my older brother. I am interested in figures with their backs turned to the viewer, which is one of the reasons I chose to paint this photograph. The ambiguity of the figures reflects my own complicated feelings about my identity, something that feels uncertain or unfixed. The addition of the rebar, with its length and color varying with each figure, here represents the different weights and variations of the Arab upbringing and experience.
