I consider this my first exploration of rebar as a material and as a symbol of my Arab identity. As a material, I find it compelling that rebar is can only be seen when a building is destroyed, otherwise it is invisible. As the child of a Syrian immigrant, the talks of Syrian history and the civil war is something embedded in my mind, and a place of war and destruction is unfortunately what people perceive Syria as. The disoriented rebar figures came about as a response to the Syrian civil war, but also addressing the normalization of associating destruction and famine to the Arab world.
