Spencer Asah

As the son of a medicine man, Spencer Asah grew up surrounded by his history and cultural practices that come to influence his art. Like other Kiowa Six artists, he attended St. Patrick’s Mission School in Anadarko, OK before being accepted into the University of Oklahoma’s School of Art under professor Oscar Jacobson. He was around 21 or 22 when he traveled with Jacobson and fellow artists to Prague to exhibit their art works. In addition to his work as a painter, he was a celebrated dancer. This work, Asah Dancing, combines his two artistic passions.
