Stephen Mopope

Stephen Mopope exhibited artistic talent from a young age, earning the Kiowa name “Qued Koi,” translated into “Painted Robe.” He was taught by elders how to paint on tanned skins. Mopope continued to have a successful career after the publication of the portfolio, including being commissioned for one of the New Deal’s many public works projects. The 16 murals he completed for the Anadarko, OK post office was the largest commissioned to a Native American Plains artist at the time. The commission was funded in part by Jacobson and Mopope received help with creating his mural designs by Spencer Asah and James Auchiah.
