Introducing the Kiowa Six

In 1915, Oscar Jacobson became the head of the Art Department at the University of Oklahoma. Among the many students he taught throughout his career were six notable artists: Stephen Mopope, Monroe Tsatoke, Jack Hokeah, Spencer Asah, and James Auchiah, all of whom arrived at the college in 1927, and Lois Bougetah Smoky who arrived in 1928. These artists came to be known as the Kiowa Six. In 1929, less than two years after the artists first arrived at the university, the portfolio Kiowa Indian Art was published. Consisting of 30 plates made in the pochoir technique, the portfolio ranges from paintings of portraits, scenes of dances, and images of warriors.
