Monroe Tsatoke

Monroe Tsatoke, which translates to “Hunting Horse,” was born near Saddle Mountain in Oklahoma. His father educated him in Kiowa culture, which Tsatoke then translated into his artistic studies with support from Dr. Oscar Jacobson. In addition to painting, he was chief singer for several years in Kiowa ceremonies; this interest is made visual in several of his prints focusing on dancers and ceremonial scenes that he created for the portfolio.
