Bougetah Smokey
Lois Bougetah Smoky (sometimes written as Smokey) was the youngest and only female member of the Kiowa Six artists. She studied art at St. Patrick’s Indian Mission School in Anadarko, OK and later joined the University of Oklahoma’s School of Art. She was only 20 or 21 when her work was exhibited internationally in Prague and several other counties. Her paintings focus on family and emphasize the details of traditional regalia. She only studied at university for a year before returning home. She married, taking the name Lois Smoky Kaulaity and later in life become recognized as a beadwork artist. Of the 30 prints that comprise the portfolio, Kiowa Family is the only work by Smoky included.
